IDB – Study of the status of legislation related to safeguards in 26 LAC countries
In 2018, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) initiated a process to update its environmental and social policies by the end of 2020.
As part of this process, the IDB asked SCG to identify advances in the management of social risks, policies and legislation in the 26 countries IDB member countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. It also asked SCG to identify good social safeguard practices and any gaps against international social standards. The study compared progress and gaps between national laws and safeguards on issues such as resettlement, consultation with indigenous peoples, working conditions, and community health and safety. The study was presented to the Bank’s Board of Directors in June 2019 as a strategic input for updating the IDB’s safeguard policies.
