Stakeholder Mapping and Social Management Strategy
Carbon Project, Colombia
Minas Paz del Rio, a subsidiary of Votorantim Metals, faced challenges in designing and implementing its Carbon Project in Boyaca, during 2012. The Project’s area of influence covered seven municipalities along the Chicamocha River Basin, all of whom had had a previous experience with both the coal industry and the Paz del Rio steelworks. This context was a challenge for the Project in terms of how to manage expectations and social legacies.
SCG was hired to conduct a stakeholder analysis in these municipalities with the aim of identifying the social dynamics, leadership roles and community interests. This information identified key social management issues. A strategy was designed that allowed the Project to strengthen its relationship with the local stakeholders and general population, by taking into consideration the identified expectations and key issues. This strategy also aimed to enable the project to obtain its environmental license.
