Design and Implementation of the Resettlement Action Plan
Marmato Project, Colombia
The Marmato Project, located in the department of Caldas, is considered a world class Project, which could exploit 11 million ounces of gold. The Project’s social context represents diverse management challenges, given the presence of informal mining, which is one of the main activities in the area. Moreover, because of the precarious nature of informal mining, the urban area is also at risk.
Gran Colombia Gold hired SCG during 2011 and 2012, to both advise them on their resettlement process and implement the local participation strategy for drafting the Project’s Resettlement Action Plan. This service included the development of an information and communications strategy, a Baseline, prepared with the participation of around 800 homes from the 7 areas within the municipality and a communications strategy to disseminate the development opportunities that the possible resettlement process could generate. Moreover, informal mining units were identified, a census was applied to register them and support was provided for the negotiation of operational contracts, within a strategy for coexistence between informal mining and the Project.
