Alto Maipo Project, Chile
The Inter-American Development Bank, the IFC and the OPIC, gave AES a loan to build the Alto Maipo Hydroelectric Project in Chile. This project included the construction of a run-of-the-river hydroelectric power station, to use the water from the Maipe river to supply the energy necessary for the metropolitan area of Santiago, Chile.
As part of the project’s environmental and social feasibility analysis, the IDB’s Environmental Safeguards Unit asked Social Capital Group to revise the social impact studies and consult the communities and the diverse stakeholders in order to identify and evaluate the social risks surrounding the mitigation plans and their relationship with AES. IDB’s loan was approved in October 2013.
