Technical Advice for Managing Social and Indigenous Issues
La Mosquitia Project, Honduras
In 2013, the BG Group signed a contract with the Honduran State for the exploration and potential off-shore exploitation of hydrocarbons along the coast of the Gracias a Dios department, known as La Mosquitia. SCG collaborated with BG from the beginning of its operations, providing advice to and accompanying the company during the free prior informed public consultation process carried out with the Miskitu indigenous population. This process helped secure their consent for the initial geo-physical studies phase.
SCG also advised BG on other key components, including their direct relations with interest groups, baseline studies and social impact evaluation and the design and implementation of communications plans. We also provided assistance in the field for negotiating agreements with indigenous organizations. Currently, SCG is coordinating and supervising the implementation of social projects to benefit the local communities, which have been funded by the company.
